With the decision to move to Burundi came the decision to add more focus to the next stage of our lives, beginning with a brand new shiny fancy pants blog! The reason things have been so quiet over here, is that I have been trying to paint the house and make it look pretty over there on the new blog! Please visit, no more drifting along with driftwood…. now you will be cruising with us on our new adventures. Thanks for following, I’m gonna need your support to make it through this big life changing move!

A good place to start over there on the new blog would be by watching this video made by the incredible Make My Day Pictures.

Today I am doing load after load after load of laundry (where is the laundry fairy when you need her?). Packing. Thinking about packing. Packing some more. Organizing cupboards.

I’ve suddenly realized that Neo does not fit into half of the things in his cupboard. How did that happen? Where did this year go? Well, wherever it went, it sure took off at a run. Last time I looked I had a new baby, now I have a standing monkey son.

I thought this poster by Mara Girling was a good reminder today! It’s so pretty. I really do love pretty typography.

All this talk of pretty reminds me of a visit I took in August to this beautiful place Mara-Mi in Stillwater, MN. A place devoted entirely to all things printed (Sidenote: Apparently, if you are a creative print designer, your name should be Mara. Everybody, name your girls Mara if you want them to be fabulous.). Their website is under construction, but what’s so great about this company is, from what I can google, it’s made up of a team of highly creative uber awesome print worthy women. The shop is beautiful, well done ladies… I am pretty sure you are going to take over the world one day soon!

How DIY amazing are the lights. I am ga ga over them! Like, as in, I want them as badly as I want Lady GaGa to come over to supper. Badly! Although, if she did come, I’d have no idea what to feed her. What do pop icons eat? I’d have to google that.

Check out this kid’s shades. Too funny!

People were going gang busters for the ice-cream. They also sold coloured fondant. And you could order cupcakes and cakes from them.
I was convinced these cushions were made for me. One look at the price, and Coffee Guy was certain they were not.

Even Coffee Guy enjoyed himself… although he didn’t try the coffee. We opted for ice-cream instead. If you are near Stillwater, you really should give this place a try.

His work is inspiring long after his death.

His life was legendary.

Plus, he wrote things like this:

“To photograph truthfully and effectively is to see beneath the surfaces and record the qualities of nature and humanity which live or are latent in all things.”

“The negative is the equivalent of the composer’s score, and the print the performance.”

“The only things in my life that compatibly exists with this grand universe are the creative works of the human spirit.”

“There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer.”

“There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.”

“A good photograph is knowing where to stand.”

“A great photograph is one that fully expresses what one feels, in the deepest sense, about what is being photographed.’

“A photograph is usually looked at – seldom looked into. “

“A true photograph need not be explained, nor can it be contained in words.”

“Sometimes I do get to places just when God’s ready to have somebody click the shutter. “

Ansel Adams

Today I wish I was back on this road. Breathing in the Northern Hemisphere air, taking photos like this. Relaxing into the journey. Relaxing, while on a journey? I usually tense up and freak out until I reach the end of the “adventure” and then I collapse into a ball of tears on the couch. Let’s try something else, shall we. One. Two. Three. Breathe your best yoga breath and smile. This is a journey we are on folks. It’s an adventure, and it’s not all about knowing how its going to end.

I was listening to a motivational speaker the other day (I know, I know… cheesy, right?) to give myself a little boost. He was talking about being “all in.” Pursuing what you love at the cost of all other things. Then he said, “What I’m saying is, if you are into collecting Smurfs, for example, SMURF IT UP PEOPLE!” He shouted, he shouted “SMURF IT UP!” I thought to myself, if that guy can shout “SMURF IT UP” I think I am capable of doing pretty much anything I set my mind to.

So, let’s go out there and SMURF IT UP people!

This is the video, and here’s my disclaimer. a) I only watched the first few minutes because internet in South Africa is way too slow to watch a 15 minute You Tube vid. Plus, he was a little too intense for me to listen to before my morning coffee. b) He’s a grown man who likes to swear. I don’t like it when grown men swear, even if it does rhyme. c) I don’t like the word “hustle.” It reminds me of high school basketball and sweaty socks.

He used to hate me. Shut me out of his room. Wrestle me to the ground and keep me there until I cried, “mercy!” He ignored me and picked on me and was generally really mean to me whenever he had a spare moment. Look, even In this photo he looks like he’s about to break my camera, wrestle me to the ground, sit on me, and then fart on my head. But today he won a fancy really important award, so today he is cool. But just for the day. My brother, copywriter guy Brett Knutson, just won a Radio Mercury Award for his Fatpants campaign (click to have a listen). Apparently this makes lots of other copywriting people very jealous, because they toil for years on end and never get the fancy really important award, but my brother did… after less than a year in his current position. So there, nah na nah na na you toiling copywriters. That was uncalled for, sorry. My childhood is rushing back all at once. I’m just really proud of my mean big brother… who has a cool pass, just for today.

I have often said that crabby pants are harder to get off than skinny jeans. This week what helped me to get those crabby pants off was making a magaziney photo journaley thingamabob (I need a good name for this… anybody got one?). Anyway, it helped me to SEE where I am at and what I am facing, and to remind me of all that I have. After I was done making this I realized I was breathing a whole lot easier (like how you breathe with your sweat pants on vs. how you breathe with your skinny jeans on… you get the picture.). So grab a glue stick and some old mags and get crackin’! Let me know how it goes.
