It’s true, but luckily bad hair days only come around once in a while (here’s to hopin’ anyway!) and let’s hope bad camera days come even less. Today I picked the wrong this that and the other for a bucket load of photos. Despite the fact that some of them are a little lacking, I wanted to show you my Mother’s Day at the little farm in the big city. Our friends Adrian and Joanne just bought a one acre property in the middle of Durban. They both grew up on farms, so this little FATY (FArm in the ciTY… get it?) fits them perfectly.
Let me preface this photo by saying that what you are about to view is not a re-enactment. You really are viewing evidence of one three year old driving the other around on a fully functioning quad bike (four-wheeler). Don’t worry, when I first saw it happen, I almost had a heart attack. Now that I am totally used to them zipping around… I only want to scream and duck my head into a very large and dark hole. And by the way, don’t show this to my mother. Seriously. Mom if you’re reading, don’t look! Moving on…
Myles and his best buddy Connor, Adi and Jo’s oldest.
They have been thrown together since birth. Technically it’s forced friendship, like brothers.
After the four wheeling, they needed to cool down in the recycled rain water tank.
Then they came out. Oh, that’s Adi and he’s taken. I knew you were wondering.
They just love being dirty and shirtless.
It makes them smile.
Someday I will post you a before and after of their “mud dates.”
Then they jumped on the trampoline and I made this delicious shrimp pasta in a foil package from The Pioneer Woman on Joanne’s awesome SMEG, which makes my cooker look like mincemeat. Meanwhile, Adrian was saving the planet by cooking up some rump steak from Joanne’s parent’s farm on his eco-friendly outdoor cooker. Then we ate, and I was too busy feeding babies and myself that I forgot to document it.
And then I took a picture of thirteen year old Nandi.
And then Jo and I checked in with the plants. She grows her own vegetables and Adrian turns the family’s poo into fuel.
She’s hiding this one from the monkeys. I’m not kidding.
A baby eggplant.
Then there was some good ol South African wine. Jest a lil bit.
Then my baby got his diaper in a knot over something.
So Joanne adjusted his neck. Maybe now would be a good time to mention that she’s a chiropractor.
That tuckered the little man right out.
Then I photographed this pretty gate.
Then this kid gave me that look and it just about scared the pants right off me.
Meanwhile this kid needed some love from the ever cuddly uncle Ben (who’s all mine, pretty much… except that coffee and I are neck and neck sometimes. He loves his coffee, a lot. I’m just flattered to be in the running.)
And then Adi made us all swoon by playing the guitar (yeah, he’s the one that’s MARRIED to Jo and recycles poop and builds eco-friendly houses.)
Then we were dirty and tuckered out so we left the FATY and drove two minutes down the road to our house in the city.
Happy Mother’s Day.
